MADRID 16 November 2023 – The Universidad de Malaga (UMA), one of the fastest growing and highly ranked universities in Spain, held a two-day Congreso Internacional de Literatura Hispanofilipina which highlighted Filipino literature written in the Spanish language on 02 to 03 November 2023.
The Congress was held in Spanish to make hispanofilipino literature accessible to everybody, even non-English speakers. Experts from universities in the Philippines, Europe and the Americas were tapped as resource persons to share their knowledge on Filipino literature written in the Spanish language.
The Congress also brought attention to the “Collección de Oriente”, a publishing effort being developed in Barcelona so that contemporary Filipino authors who write in Spanish have a platform to disseminate their works.
The Ambassador thanked the officials of UMA for their efforts to preserve hispanofilipino literature, saying that the Congress was “a wonderful occasion to celebrate literature that connects both the Philippines and Spain, and other Spanish-speaking countries.” The Ambassador encouraged the Congress attendees to work together in further cementing relations between the Philippines and Spanish-speaking countries.
On the same day, the University inaugurated the Philippine Office under the auspices of the Office of the Vice President for Mobility and International Cooperation, which is the first Philippine office established in the south of Spain to cement the official academic partnership of UMA with the University of the Philippines to further promote academic exchanges.
