Philippines Reiterates Support for Global Disaster Risk Reduction Efforts
Permanent Representative Carlos D. Sorreta conveys the Philippines’ support for the UNDRR
GENEVA 20 November 2023 – The Philippines reiterated its commitment to contribute to global disaster risk reduction efforts, including through continued strong partnership with the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), during Permanent Representative Carlos D. Sorreta’s participation in the UNDRR Donor Meeting held on 16 November 2023.
Ambassador Sorreta recalled the Philippines’ support for the UNDRR the past year through its voluntary financial contributions to the organization, as well as separate contributions to the Global Platform on Disaster Risk Reduction and the Mid-term Review of the Sendai Framework.
Ambassador Sorreta recognized the role of the UNDRR in encouraging and facilitating cooperation among governments and stakeholders. “We believe that there is an urgency to implement the Sendai Framework and to build risk resilience especially in hazard-prone and climate change vulnerable countries such as the Philippines, and the UNDRR plays a key role in this regard,” he stated.
Ambassador Sorreta also shared that the Philippines will be bringing the conversation on disaster risk reduction and resilience to the Asia Pacific region, as the country is set to host the Asia Pacific Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction (APMCDRR) in October 2024.
The Philippines has been a consistent donor to and supporter of the UNDRR. END
