Philippines Explores Enhanced Bilateral Cooperation during 52nd Pacific Islands Forum

PHOTO: At the sidelines of the 52nd Pacific Islands Forum (52PIFLM) in Rarotonga on 09 November 2023, the Cook Islands, Special Envoy of the President to the Pacific Islands Forum, Foreign Affairs Undersecretary Jesus Domingo agreed with Fiji High Commissioner and former Fiji Minister of Foreign Affairs and Defence, to explore enhanced cooperation in defense, police, peacekeeping, and diplomacy training to promote Philippine and Southeast Asian and Pacific studies in each other’s countries. Fiji and Philippines mark 50 years of diplomatic relations this year.

Domingo and Marshall Islands Foreign Minister Jack Ading commit to uphold the SEANFWZ Treaty and the South Pacific Nuclear-Free Zone Treaty (Rarotonga Treaty) and to explore further cooperation in fisheries, climate action, and diplomatic training. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the 52nd PIF in Rarotonga, the Cook Islands on 09 November 2023.

Domingo reconnected with the Minister of State of the Republic of Palau Gustav Aitaro on the sidelines of the 52nd Pacific Islands Forum in Rarotonga, the Cook Islands agreed to resume maritime and health cooperation.

PHOTO: In his meeting with Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) Secretariat Director for Policy Joel Nilon, Special Envoy Jesus Domingo expressed the Philippine’s readiness to offer technical support to PIF Members in the areas of Labor Mobility, and hoped for more opportunities for PIF dialogue partners to engage with the forum, including through possible inter-sessional meetings on 09 November 2023. Special Envoy Domingo and Mr. Nilon highlighted the new opportunities arising from the recent signing of the MOU between the ASEAN and PIF secretariats.

Domingo conveyed Philippines’s readiness to support Samoa’s agricultural priorities at his meeting with Samoa Prime Minister Fiame Mata’afa on the sidelines of the 52nd Pacific Islands forum on 10 November 2023. Special Envoy Domingo said this can be achieved through enhanced technical cooperation activities to focus also on fisheries. Special Envoy Domingo and Prime Minister Mata’afa also discussed possible Philippine technical assistance in veterinary training.
