NEW YORK 01 December 2023Chargé d'affaires ad interim Ariel Rodelas Peñaranda reiterated the Philippines' support for efforts to deliver urgent humanitarian assistance and essential supplies to Palestinian civilians caught in the midst of the conflict in Gaza.

Speaking at the UN General Assembly Debate on “The situation in the Middle East and the question of Palestine” on November 28, 2023, at the UN headquarters in New York, CDA Peñaranda, Deputy Permanent Representative, commended the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA), and other related UN agencies for their efforts and sacrifices amidst these challenging times in Gaza.

He stressed that the safety and security of all civilians are essential, and that critical facilities, including humanitarian shelters and hospitals, must continue to address the humanitarian needs of those affected by the hostilities in a sustained and resolute manner.

“The Philippines reiterates its dedication to supporting peace and stability in the Middle East, with a focused commitment to resolving the Israeli-Hamas hostilities. The presence of a significant Filipino community in the Middle East and Israel accentuates the relevance of this issue to the Philippines and highlights the importance of our profound concern about the peace process,” CDA Peñaranda further emphasized.

CDA Peñaranda also highlighted that the Philippines celebrated the release of a Filipino national, one of the first 24 hostages freed by Hamas after nearly 50 days in captivity in Gaza.

“He will soon be reunited with his family and loved ones in the Philippines,” he added, commending the efforts of all parties involved in this diplomatic breakthrough.

CDA Peñaranda urged all concerned parties to immediately implement urgent solutions that would prevent the conflict from further escalating, spreading, and protracting, emphasizing that it is in the interest of Israeli and Palestinian civilians, as well as all states in the region, to ensure that this conflict does not extend beyond Gaza and risk engulfing the wider region in conflict.

“The Philippines reiterates its firm support for a two-state solution, consistently aligned with relevant UN resolutions and international agreements. Both Israelis and Palestinians deserve a future where their rights, aspirations, and security are recognized and upheld,” CDA Peñaranda emphasized.

"…we believe that a lasting resolution can only emerge from diplomatic engagement, dialogue, and comprehensive negotiation between parties involved, all rooted in international law," he added, and called on nations to be united “not just in seeking temporary relief, but in pursuing lasting peace and dignity for all within the region.” END
