VIENNA 19 December 2023 – The Philippine Permanent Mission to the United Nations and Other International Organizations in Vienna presented the Philippine candidature to become a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the term 2027-2028 at a reception for a select group of countries on 14 December 2023 at the Park Hyatt Vienna. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. announced the Philippines’ candidacy at the 77th United Nations General Assembly in September 2022.

In her remarks, Philippine Ambassador and Permanent Representative Evangelina Lourdes A. Bernas introduced the three main commitments of the Philippines should its bid for the UNSC be successful, namely to be a “partner, pathfinder, and peacemaker” in the United Nations’ premier decision-making body. She assured guests that the Philippines will build partnerships for peace and sustainable development, and affirmed the country’s dedication “to finding enduring solutions for overcoming common challenges through dialogue, consensus-building, and collaborative problem-solving.” Amb. Bernas also made special mention of the country’s long history in actively participating in UN peacekeeping and special political missions, having deployed over 14,000 men and women in the last 60 years.

Elections for the UNSC 2027-2028 term will take place in June 2026 in New York. The Philippines was previously elected as a non-permanent member of the UNSC in 195, 1963, 1980-1981, and 2004-2005.  END
