Philippines Unanimously Elected to Lead Administrative Working Group of Comprehensive Nuclear Test-Ban-Treaty Organization from 2024 to 2026

Ambassador and Permanent Representative Evangelina Lourdes A. Bernas was unanimously elected as Chair of Working Group A (WGA) of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO)

VIENNA 27 December 2023– In another milestone for the Philippines’ efforts to contribute to nuclear disarmament and peacebuilding, Ambassador and Permanent Representative Evangelina Lourdes A. Bernas was unanimously elected as Chair of Working Group A (WGA) of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO) on 04 December 2023 during the 61st Session of the CTBTO Preparatory Commission (Prep Com). 

WGA deals with budgetary and administrative matters, such as the annual budget, financial and staff regulations, and rules and legal issues of the CTBTO. The Philippines will hold the term for three years, from January 2024 to December 2026, and is expected to facilitate discussions that pave the way for consensus decisions to ensure full functionality of the CTBTO, an international organization critical to preventing nuclear weapons testing.
