CHONGQING 22 January 2024 – The Philippine Consulate General in Chongqing kicked off its 2024 economic diplomacy program in a meeting with Deputy Director General Ye Lina of the Chongqing Commission of Commerce (CCC) to take stock of the mega-municipality’s economic relations with the Philippines and to discuss effective means to increase two-way trade and investment flows.
According to the CCC, total trade between the Philippines and Chongqing surpassed RMB 6 billion (≈USD 789.5 million) from January to November 2023 while Chongqing’s investments in the Philippines in the same period stood at USD 52.7 million, representing a 15-fold increase year-on-year.
Both sides agreed that economic engagements could be much improved by regular consultations and coordination to boost business-to-business exchanges.
Deputy Director General Ye Lina reaffirmed the Commerce Commission’s keen interest to increase Chongqing’s imports of Philippine goods, including fresh fruits, seafood and electronics and promoting bilateral investments. Philippine Consul General Flerida Ann Camille P. Mayo conveyed her office’s readiness to work with the CCC for a more targeted approach to intensify economic relations. She took the opportunity to call attention to other Philippine export goods such as electronic integrated circuits and nickel ores, among other products for trading with China. The Philippine Consul General also underlined the Philippines’ access to top export markets including the US, EU, Japan, South Korea, and the UK.
“In an earnest effort to promote Philippines-Chongqing business and people-to-people ties, the Philippine Consulate General has participated in practically every major trade, agricultural, tourism and cultural show in Chongqing since 2021. Together with the Chongqing Commerce Commission, we hope to generate the necessary momentum to deliver more value and economic benefits for our peoples,” Philippine Consul General Flerida Ann Camille P. Mayo said. END
