Philippines Contributes to Myanmar’s Recovery Process Post-Tropical Cyclone Mocha

JAKARTA 13 February 2024 – In solidarity with the people of Myanmar, the Philippines donated $100,000 towards the ongoing recovery and rebuilding efforts in the aftermath of Tropical Cyclone Mocha on 06 February 2024.

At simple ceremonies at the ASEAN Secretariat in Jakarta, Philippine Ambassador Hjayceelyn M. Quintana, Permanent Representative of the Philippines to ASEAN, officiated the symbolic turn-over of the contribution to ASEAN Secretary-General Dr. Kao Kim Hourn in his capacity as the ASEAN Humanitarian Assistance Coordinator (SG-AHAC). The ceremony was witnessed by Ambassador Aung Myo Myint, Permanent Representative of Myanmar to ASEAN, and attended by officers of the Philippine Mission and of the ASEAN Secretariat. 

In her remarks, Ambassador Quintana underscored that “Myanmar, like the Philippines, is prone to natural disasters, and it is crucial that we help build ASEAN’s capacity to withstand and recover from such events in the future. Our collective expertise can contribute to the development of sustainable recovery strategies and the strengthening of our region’s disaster response capabilities.” 

Secretary-General Kao expressed his sincere appreciation for the staunch support of the Philippines to disaster management and humanitarian assistance in ASEAN “Indeed, the contribution from the Government of the Philippines today, along with my roles as SG-AHAC, underscores that ASEAN, as a region, stands in solidarity with the people and the affected communities in Myanmar and further reaffirms ASEAN’s commitment to the implementation of ‘One ASEAN One Response’”, said Secretary General Kao. 

Tropical Cyclone MOCHA made its landfall on 14 May 2023 in Myanmar and reports have indicated that around 1.23 million people have been affected across all states and districts in Myanmar. Through this contribution, the Philippines hopes to support Myanmar’s cyclone-affected regions in their road to recovery and rehabilitation, improved livelihoods for local communities, and enhance well-being.
