Philippine Ambassador Presents Credentials to Costa Rican President

SAN JOSÉ 11 April 2024 – Philippine Ambassador Lilybeth R. Deapera presented her credentials as Non-Resident Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of the Philippines to President Rodrigo Chaves Robles in a ceremony held at Casa Presidencial of the Republic of Costa Rica on 04 April 2024.

Among the six (6) Ambassadors who were newly accredited to Costa Rica, Ambassador Deapera was accompanied by Second Secretary and Consul Ralf G. Roldan. Minister of Foreign Affairs and Worship Arnold Andre Tinoco who also received the Ambassador´s open copies of letters of credentials on the same day, likewise witnessed the ceremony.

During the brief discussion that ensued, Ambassador Deapera conveyed the best wishes of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., as well as her appreciation for the opportunity to be formally accredited to Costa Rica as Non-Resident Ambassador of the Philippines.  She then expressed the country's readiness to further engage with Costa Rica through the conduct of the inaugural Bilateral Consultation Meeting (BCM). 

Meanwhile, President Chaves impressed the invitation for the Philippines to attend the Third United Nations Ocean Conference, taking place in Nice, France in June 2025, which is jointly chaired by his government and that of France.  He then recalled his visits to the Philippines filled with pleasant memories of the Philippine cuisine and handicrafts.

The Philippines and Costa Rica formally established diplomatic relations on 05 July 1946.  In 2023, total trade with Costa Rica amounted to USD 55.6 million with the balance of trade in favor of the Philippines.  Exports to Costa Rica amounted to USD 35.4 million while imports amounted to USD 20.2 million.
