02 July 2014 - The Philippines, on behalf of the Asia-Pacific member states of the Group of 77 (G77) and China, delivered a statement on July 1 during the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the G77 and China held at United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Headquarters in Paris, France.
The Philippines is currently Chair of the Asia-Pacific Electoral Group in UNESCO.
In her address, Philippine Ambassador Ma. Theresa P. Lazaro, Permanent Delegate of the Philippines to UNESCO, stated that “while the Group of 77 and China was founded 50 years ago, its goals and raison d’etre remain not only relevant in addressing current global challenges, but indeed, are central to realizing our shared vision of a more just, more peaceful, and more equitable and sustainable world.”
The G77 and China Paris-UNESCO Chapter adopted a Declaration on the occasion of the 50th Anniversary of the Group’s foundation.
Ambassador Lazaro reaffirmed the support of the Asia-Pacific member states to further galvanize solidarity and cooperation between developing countries in UNESCO. “We firmly believe that South-South cooperation is a key engine for economic growth, global action, and sustainable development,” added Lazaro.
She also underscored the need to integrate the role of culture in the post-2015 development agenda and the importance for the G77 and China to make its voice heard.
“In many respects, our success shall greatly define the future multilateral system and it shall also be a measure of the attainment of UNESCO’s objectives… Let us work together to ensure the betterment of present and future generations.” concluded the Ambassador. END
