Filipino Excellence in Computing and Innovation Recognized at Top ASEAN-wide ICT Competition; to Represent the Region in the Global Finals

JAKARTA 18 April 2024 – Permanent Representative of the Philippines to ASEAN, Ambassador Hjayceelyn M. Quintana, alongside ASEAN Secretary General Dr. Kao Kim Hourn, awarded the students from the Philippines, who bagged two out of the four Grand Prizes at the 8th Huawei ICT Competition Asia Pacific Finals 2023-2024 Awarding Ceremony, held at Nusantara Hall in the ASEAN Secretariat.
Students from the Makati-based iAcademy, which won 2024’s Global Brands “World’s Most Innovative School,” topped the competition’s Computing Track. The Computing Track challenged the participants’ aptitude on the OpenEuler and OpenGauss open- source programming languages.
Meanwhile, students from Cebu Institute of Technology - University (CIT-U) triumphed on the Innovation Track. The CIT-U students won by developing an ingenious heart attack monitoring system that processes data collected from smart watches through algorithms based on heart condition markers. This innovation was presented to the attendees of the event.
The Filipino participants bested fellow young innovators from ASEAN as well as from Bangladesh, Hong Kong SAR, Macao SAR, and Sri Lanka.
The students were among over 160,000 students from 2,000 universities and 83 countries around the world and will be representing the Asia-Pacific region in the Global Finals to be held in Shenzhen, China, in May 2024. END
