BRATISLAVA 02 May 2024 – Foreign Affairs Undersecretary for Multilateral and International Economic Relations Charles C. Jose highlighted the shared interests of the Philippines and Slovak Republic in greater trade and investment between the two countries, in the peaceful settlement of international disputes, and the preservation of a rules-based international order, in the first visit of Philippine officials to the Foreign Ministry in Bratislava since Slovakia’s Presidential elections in early April. Mr. Jose met with Director General for International Organizations and Human Rights Peter Hulényi and DG for Political Affairs Martin Kačo of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic in Bratislava on 29 April 2024.
Philippine and Slovak officials also had an exchange of views regarding possible new areas for cooperation, which encompassed the prospect of reciprocal visits by high-ranking government officials, a return visit of Slovakian business representatives to the Philippines later this year, as well as possible agreements on defense, economic, and labor cooperation.
The Philippines and the Slovak Republic celebrated the 30th anniversary of the establishment of bilateral relations in 2023. The Slovak Republic ranked as the Philippines’ 58th bilateral trading partner (out of 217), with total trade amounting to USD $39 million, in 2023. To date, there are an estimated 551 Filipinos living in the Slovak Republic. END.
