AGANA 03 May 2024 - In celebration of Philippine National Literature Month, the Philippine Consulate General in Guam (Agana PCG) conducted a lecture at the University of Guam (UOG) entitled, “Tinig ng Panitikan: Pagkilala sa mga Pambansang Alagad ng Sining” (“The Voice of Literature: Celebrating Philippine National Artists”) on 29 April 2024.

The lecture was held during the Tagalog 101 classes of Prof. Fely Angel in UOG, where students learn conversational Tagalog as well as Philippine history and culture.

Agana PCG discussed the history of the Order of National Artists as well as the process, criteria and categories for selecting Philippine National Artists. Out of the nineteen (19) National Artists for Literature, the Consulate highlighted the significant contributions of five (5) National Artists for Literature who wrote poems in the Filipino language, namely: Bienvenido Lumbera, Virgilio S. Almario, Ramon L. Muzones, Rolando S. Tinio and Cirilo F. Bautista.

After the lecture, the Consulate showed a video presentation on poetry reading of “45” by Virgilio S. Almario and “Patalim” by Cirilo F. Bautista. The students also participated in translating Mr. Almario’s poem from Tagalog to English, as well as in interpreting the possible meaning of the poem. The Consulate, Prof. Angel and the students enjoyed the lively discussion on the poem afterwards.

To close the session, the Consulate thanked the students’ active participation and to Prof. Fely Angel and UOG for allowing the Consulate to share information on an important topic in Philippine Literature and hoped that the activities provided additional knowledge about Filipino language and culture.
