PH Consul General Highlights Business Opportunities in PH Construction Industry at 2024 Sydney Build

SYDNEY 08 May 2024 – The Philippine Contractors Accreditation Board, Philippine Overseas Construction Board, and Philippine Trade and Investment Center (PTIC) in Sydney jointly organized a Forum entitled “Building Partnership Opportunities: Licensing for Foreign Contractors in the Philippines” on 02 May 2024 at the sidelines of 2024 Sydney Build. 

In her remarks, Philippine Consul General to Sydney Charmaine Rowena C. Aviquivil cited the strong outlook on the Philippine economy demonstrated by the stable ratings of top credit rating agencies, recently enacted laws and Build Better More infrastructure programs to boost investments, and highlighted business opportunities in the Philippine construction industry, particularly the architectural and engineering services outsourcing and access to the construction market in terms of licensing and procedures. 

Emphasizing the closer bilateral ties between the Philippines and Australia, including the signing of the Joint Declaration on a Strategic Partnership in September 2023, and the recent visits of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. in February 2024 and March 2024 in Australia, Consul General Aviquivil encouraged the attendees to ‘Make it Happen in the Philippines.’

Executive Director Doris Gacho of the Philippine Overseas Construction Board (POCB) discussed the Philippine construction industry services and underscored the young working population along with the number of engineering and architecture students graduating every year. 

Division Chief Mr. Paul Ryan Sting Fugen of the Philippine Contractors Accreditation Board (PCAB), meanwhile, presented on the mandate of PCAB that issues licenses to qualified contractors, monitors contractors’ compliance, and offers professional development programs on industry trends and best practices. PCAB is an attached agency of the Department of Trade and Industry and one of the implementing Boards in the Construction Industry Authority of the Philippines (CIAP). 

Chief Trade Industry Development Specialist Engr. Sergie Retome of PCAB, on the other hand, explained about the different licensing categories, requirements, and procedures for local and foreign contractors and subcontractors. 

After the presentations of POCB and PCAB, Philippine Senior Trade Representative Alma Argayoso moderated the open forum where members of the Philippine delegation responded to inquiries from the attendees. 

The Philippine delegation, who also had a booth at the 2024 Sydney Build, is composed of officials and representatives from the Philippine Contractors Accreditation Board, Philippine Overseas Construction Board, Construction Manpower Development Foundation, and Professional Regulatory Commission. 

2024 Sydney Build, held on 1 and 2 May 2024 at the International Convention Center, is the largest construction and design industry event in Australia that attracted thousands of contractors, architects, civil engineers, developers, councils, housebuilders, and construction professionals through exhibitions and networking events.
