JAKARTA 28 May 2024 – The Philippines reaffirmed its strong support to inter-Parliamentary cooperation across ASEAN by making a voluntary contribution of USD 20,000.00 to the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) on 13 May 2024.
At simple ceremonies at the ASEAN Headquarters in Jakarta, Permanent Representative of the Philippines to ASEAN Ambassador Hjayceelyn M. Quintana officiated the symbolic turn-over of the voluntary contribution to AIPA Secretary General Rozaimeriyanty Dato Haji Abdul Rahman. The ceremony was attended by officers of the Philippine Mission and the AIPA Secretariat.
In her remarks, Ambassador Quintana recalled the Philippines’ proposal in the 80s to establish an ASEAN Parliament, which aimed to strengthen regional cooperation by providing a platform for parliamentary dialogue and collaboration among ASEAN Member-States. That same visionary initiative sparked important discussions and laid the groundwork for future efforts to enhance parliamentary diplomacy within ASEAN. The AIPA Secretary General hailed PH's contribution which she said will significantly enhance AIPA’s efforts to foster parliamentary cooperation in the region and beyond”, said the Secretary General.
The voluntary contribution reflects the Philippines’ confidence in the invaluable role that parliamentary diplomacy plays in advancing the ASEAN goal of creating a people- centered ASEAN. END
