Philippines Features Traditional Dessert Suman at Cooking School: ASEAN Tradition

The ASEAN Committee in Prague (ACP) organized Cooking School: ASEAN Tradition  at the Chef Parade cooking studio in Holesovice, Prague 7 on 16 May 2024. The Embassy of the Philippines, through Prague-based Filipino Chef Mr. Dario Lleva (extreme left) introduced the ingredients and demonstrated the preparation of the Philippine traditional dessert Suman. PRAGUE 29 May 2024 – The Embassy of the Philippines in the Czech Republic  capped its celebration of Filipino Food Month (FFM) 2024 or Buwan ng Kalutong Filipino 2024 by showcasing the Philippine dessert Suman at the Cooking School: ASEAN Tradition, a  one-day cooking show  organized by the ASEAN Committee in Prague (ACP) at the Chef Parade cooking studio in  Holesovice, Prague 7 on 16 May 2024.

The event featured a  traditional dish (appetizer, entrée, or dessert)  from each of the six resident ASEAN Embassies in Prague (Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam). The Philippines, in line with FFM 2024’s theme “Kalutong Filipino, Lakas ng Kabataang Makabago,” and in partnership with Prague-based Filipino Chef Mr. Dario Lleva of Restaurace Mlýnec,  introduced the ingredients and demonstrated the preparation and presentation of the traditional suman with caramel sauce and latik.

In his remarks, Ambassador Eduardo Martin R. Meñez shared with the participants a brief background on suman and its flavorful journey and how it still plays a vital role in Philippine cuisine. He also highlighted the similarities in preparing ASEAN dishes, brought about by similar resources and traditions.

Chefs from hotels, restaurants, and food catering companies; editors of gastronomic magazines; students of the cooking school; and media personalities participated in the cooking show. END
