PH Consulate General Stages Culinary and Cultural Extravaganza Through "Comerse el Mundo" Event with Universidad Autonoma de Barcelona

BARCELONA 20 June 2024 – The Philippine Consulate General in Barcelona proudly hosted the "Comerse el Mundo" event, a vibrant cultural exchange aimed at introducing and celebrating diverse cuisines. This initiative, part of a series organized by the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB), brought together journalism students and media personnel to learn about the culinary traditions of different countries.

The "Comerse el Mundo" series is a project by UAB where journalism students visit various consulates in Barcelona to explore and document the unique cuisines of different nations. The Philippine edition saw close to 100 journalism graduate students from UAB, alongside a diverse array of media personnel, actively engaging in a variety of activities prepared by the Consulate.

Participants enjoyed spontaneous interviews on Filipino and Spanish cuisine, a trivia challenge, an exhibit showcasing the food prepared for the guests, karaoke, and a tinikling performance with audience participation. These activities provided an immersive experience, highlighting the rich cultural heritage and culinary traditions of the Philippines.

The event commenced with opening remarks from Consul General Maria Theresa S.M. Lazaro, who expressed her enthusiasm for the opportunity to share Filipino culture and cuisine with the students and media professionals. UAB Department of Journalism Director Santiago Tejedor Calvo also spoke, providing context on the "Comerse el Mundo" initiative.

The highlight of the event was an in-depth exploration of Filipino cuisine. The Consulate delivered an engaging and informative introduction to the concepts and flavor profiles that define Philippine food. Attendees were given historical context for the dishes, showcasing the unique blend of indigenous, Spanish, Chinese, and American influences that have shaped the Philippines' rich culinary heritage.

The "Comerse el Mundo" event was both a gastronomic and educational journey, emphasizing the cultural significance of food in uniting people. Through this collaboration, UAB students gained valuable insights into Filipino culture, enhancing their cultural literacy and appreciation for the Filipino community in Barcelona—one of the city's largest Asian diasporas—as well as the diverse communities within the city.
