JAKARTA 28 June 2024 – Philippine Ambassador Hjayceelyn M. Quintana, in her capacity as Country Coordinator for ASEAN-Pacific Alliance relations, and Ambassador Mario Artaza, as President Pro Tempore of the Pacific Alliance (PA) for 2024, jointly hosted a reception at the Permanent Mission of the Philippines in Jakarta on 13 June 2024. The event was held in honor of Chilean Ministry of Foreign Affairs Vice-Minister for International Economic Affairs Claudia Sanhueza during her visit to the Indonesian capital.
The reception provided a platform for Vice-Minister Sanhueza, whose mandate is to coordinate the Pacific Alliance’s relations with its partners, to engage with the Committee of Permanent Representatives to ASEAN (CPR) and strengthen ASEAN-PA relations.
In her remarks, Ambassador Quintana highlighted the crucial role of regional organizations such as ASEAN and the PA, particularly in the maintenance of international peace and security, as well as in the promotion of development and prosperity. She stressed that while ASEAN and PA are an ocean away, they play vital roles in shaping global dynamics and navigating the complexities of the world.
Ambassador Quintana encouraged the PA, whose members are on the other side of the Pacific, to join ASEAN in promoting the implementation of the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific (AOIP), through concrete and practical activities in the areas of maritime cooperation, connectivity, United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, and economic and other possible areas of cooperation. The AOIP provides a perspective of viewing the Asia-Pacific and Indian Ocean regions as a closely integrated and interconnected region, with ASEAN playing a central and strategic role.
Vice Minister Sanhueza expressed commitment to continue consolidating ties through a solid program of dialogue and cooperation with ASEAN, in which Chile is a “Development Partner”. Chile is also the first Latin American country to establish development partnership with ASEAN.
Distinguished guests in attendance included the CPR or their representatives, Ambassadors of the Pacific Alliance member countries, Deputy Secretary-General of ASEAN for ASEAN Economic Community Satvinder Singh, and the Ambassador of Timor-Leste to ASEAN. END
