PH Consulate General in Hong Kong Features Sulat Kamay Project Poems to Commemorate Migrant Workers Day
The Consulate General’s Sining Malaya Art Corner features the framed handwritten poems of the Hesychiarium Group in commemoration of the Migrant Workers Day.
HONG KONG 02 July 2024 – The Philippine Consulate General featured the works of the Sulat Kamay Project Hong Kong, established by the Hesychiarium Group, in its Sining Malaya Art Corner for the month of June. This is in commemoration of the Migrant Workers Day which is celebrated every June 07. The exhibit of written works was opened to the public on 2 June 2024 at the Consulate's Public Area.
The Hesychiarium Group is a group of poetry enthusiasts composed primarily of Filipino domestic workers based in Hong Kong. Their group strives to promote art, education, values and insight development through poetry. They partnered with the Sulat Kamay Project, an art advocacy campaign from the Philippines that began in 2023, to establish the Sulat Kamay Project Hong Kong. The project aims to pave a more engaging avenue for Filipino poets to showcase their works through framed handwritten poems.
During the opening of the exhibit, Philippine Consul General to Hong Kong Germinia V. Aguilar-Usudan emphasized that one of the objectives of the Consulate and Sentro Rizal Hong Kong's Sining Malaya Art Corner is to highlight the contributions of OFWs in Hong Kong to Philippine culture, through the arts. This is also the Consulate’s way of showcasing the various talents of the Filipino workers to the Hong Kong community, for better understanding and appreciation of their struggles and their other skills as well.
A total of ten framed handwritten poems from the Sulat Kamay Project Hong Kong are currently exhibited at the Consulate's Sining Malaya Art Corner. These poems manifest the dreams, aspirations, worries, and motivations of the OFW poets.
This month's featured poets include: (1) Cherry O. Nava, (2) Mera Jane Ompad, (3) Lawrence Batalla, (4) Jonelyn M. Dorimon, (5) Benny L. Abulencia, (6) JP Nuñez, (7) Jeanette Lopez Moral, (8) Ledarose Santos Delima, (9) Juan Pablo Felikzo, and (10) Annaliza V. Aquino.
