PH Embassy Turns Over PH Government’s Monetary Donation to Chile
SANTIAGO 19 August 2024 — Philippine Ambassador to Chile H.E. Celeste Vinzon-Balatbat called on Chilean Foreign Affairs Minister Alberto Van Klaveren to turn over the monetary donation by the Philippine Government for the Government of Chile’s ongoing rehabilitation of areas seriously affected by the forest fires in February 2024, and as part of the ongoing cooperation between the Philippines and Chile on disaster risk reduction and management (DRRM).
The Philippines and Chile are both vulnerable to natural disasters, and both sit within the Pacific Ring of Fire. The February 2024 forest fires that razed many parts of the country are considered as the largest ever in terms of land area affected, and the most lethal in terms of fatalities. On the other hand, the Philippines is frequented by at least five destructive typhoons yearly. With these frequent ecological challenges in mind, both countries successfully negotiated and concluded an MOU on Disaster Risk Reduction and Management in November 2015.
Both sides also discussed other areas of bilateral cooperation, including the proposed exchange of best practices in the areas of renewable energy, sustainable mining, and fisheries and aquaculture. END
