Philippines and Ecuador Engage to Strengthen Bilateral and Multilateral Relations

Undersecretary for Multilateral Affairs and International Economic Relations Charles C. Jose exchange gifts with Vice Minister for Multilateral Affairs Luis Arellano Jibaja from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Human Mobility of Ecuador

SANTIAGO 30 August 2024 – The Philippines, represented by Undersecretary for Multilateral Affairs and International Economic Relations Charles C. Jose, met with high-level representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Human Mobility of Ecuador on 22 August 2024 to discuss areas of mutual interest and explore opportunities for enhanced cooperation on the bilateral and multilateral stage.

Undersecretary Jose embarked on a strategic swing visit to Ecuador, prior to the  APEC Senior Officials’ Meeting (SOM3) in Lima, Peru,  and met with Vice Minister for Multilateral Affairs Luis Arellano and Vice Minister for Africa, Asia, and Oceania Doris Yolanda Melo from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Human Mobility of Ecuador.

On the bilateral level, the Philippines and Ecuador agreed to continue pursuing concrete initiatives in political security, trade and investment, agriculture, cultural diplomacy and tourism, and people-to-people contacts.

In the meeting with the Multilateral Affairs Division, the Philippines highlighted its candidature for the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) 2027-2028 and underscored the Philippines’s UNSC priorities to uphold rule of law and the peaceful settlement of disputes and advocacies for the establishment of institutions to ensure safety and order in post-conflict societies, and protection of the rights and freedoms of civilians, including promoting the role of women and youth in peace and security, among other priorities.

The Philippines and Ecuador share common areas of mutual interest in the multilateral arena, including initiatives in advancing the women, peace, and security agenda, addressing the impact of climate change, and in being part of the global conversation on emerging technologies.

“Despite the geographical distance, the Philippines and Ecuador have many areas to work together not just for the mutual benefit of both countries but broadly for humanity,” emphasized Undersecretary Jose.

The Philippines and Ecuador established diplomatic relations on 05 July 1946. The Philippine Embassy in Chile, headed by Ambassador Celeste Vinzon-Balatbat, holds jurisdiction over Ecuador. END
