VIENNA 04 September 2024 – The Philippines and Australia co-organized an interactive training on gender-sensitive language for diplomats in Vienna on 29 August 2024 at the Vienna International Center, the first of its kind. As co-Chairs of the Group of Friends (GoF) for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women in the UN Office in Vienna/UN Office of Drugs and Crime (UNOV/UNODC), The Philippines and Australia worked together with the UNODC Gender Team on the successful training session, with a full conference room of 60 participants who actively engaged in the discussions and hands-on exercises.

In her opening remarks, Ambassador Evangelina A. Bernas highlighted the importance of language and how it influences one’s experience and understanding of the world. She mentioned the Filipino national language which has no gender, and how this reflects Philippine society where men and women equally play important roles and carry shared responsibilities in the community.

The Philippines welcomed the timely conduct of the gender-sensitive language to guide diplomats from various Permanent Missions in Vienna in their negotiations of UN resolutions and statements to promote gender equality and women empowerment.  END
