Batik Diplomacy Fosters People-to-People Exchanges for 75th Anniversary of PH-Indonesia Relations

JAKARTA 05 September 2024 – As part of the celebration this year of the 75th anniversary of Philippines-Indonesia diplomatic relations, the Philippine Women’s Association (PWA) Indonesia, in collaboration with the Philippine Embassy in Jakarta, successfully organized a batik-making workshop for the Filipino community and other members of the expatriate community in Jakarta on 01 September 2024 at the Embassy’s Multi-Purpose Hall.  

The batik-making workshop aimed to enhance appreciation and understanding of Indonesian culture through the intricate art of batik. This traditional Indonesian fabric dyeing technique is celebrated for its beautiful patterns and cultural significance. The workshop provided a unique opportunity for Filipinos and other expatriates to immerse themselves in this distinct craft while celebrating the strong cultural ties between the Philippines and Indonesia.

Participants were guided by skilled Indonesian artisans who demonstrated the traditional methods of batik-making - from wax-resist techniques to the application of vibrant dyes.The workshop provided hands-on experience in creating their personalized batik designs. Participants were able to take home their framed batik masterpieces. 

Minister and Consul General Gonaranao B. Musor expressed his gratitude to the PWA, headed by its President, Ms. Rosalie S. Ticman, for this initiative that formed part of this diplomatic milestone between the Philippines and Indonesia. “This workshop exemplifies the concept of ‘batik diplomacy’ which is aimed at further strengthening the people-to-people exchanges and friendship between the Philippines and Indonesia,” Consul General Musor added.

The event was attended by the members of PWA, Filipino teachers in Jakarta, various foreign nationals, and personnel of the Philippine Embassy and their children. END
