Vienna091802

VIENNA 18 September 2024 - The Philippines recognized the benefits of atomic energy and their contribution to socioeconomic development in a statement at the meeting of the International Atomic Energy (IAEA) Board of Governors (BOG) on 09-13 September 2024 in Vienna.

Amidst the reversal of progress in some of the Sustainable Development Goals, Philippine Ambassador and Permanent Representative Evangelina A. Bernas emphasized the need for novel approaches to long-standing problems, through the creative application of atomic energy.

“The Philippines strongly believes that nuclear technology’s peaceful applications should be scaled to commercial use to achieve their intended multiplier effect,” said Ambassador Bernas. She further highlighted the efforts of the Philippines to mainstream the application of atomic energy at the national level through projects in food and agriculture, natural resources and environment, health especially in cancer care, industry, energy, and education, and internationally. The Philippine Mission in Vienna authored a landmark working paper titled, “Upscaling the Non-Power Applications of Nuclear Energy” which was sponsored and submitted by 29 countries during the Second Preparatory Committee for the 11th Review Conference of the Nuclear Non Proliferation Treaty held in Geneva last August.
