Philippines Reaffirms Commitment to Nuclear and Radiation Safety at IAEA BOG Meeting
VIENNA 18 September 2024 - The Philippines reaffirmed its commitment to nuclear and radiation safety during the meeting of the International Atomic Energy (IAEA) Board of Governors (BOG) on 09-13 September 2024 in Vienna.
First Secretary and Alternate Representative Ms. Candy Cypres-Bauzon recalled the Philippines’ commitment to observe the highest standards of nuclear safety to protect human health and the environment. “This is even more relevant now for both power and non-power applications of atomic energy as the Philippines embarks on its nuclear energy programme guided by the IAEA’s ‘Milestone Approach,’” she stated.
Ms. Cypres-Bauzon also expressed appreciation for IAEA’s Legislative Assistance Programme which provided a comprehensive briefing on nuclear safety to Philippine legislators as they work to enhance the country’s legal framework. Also highlighted were the Philippine initiatives in ASEAN to help spread more awareness about the benefits of having a civil nuclear liability regime in place, including hosting the regional workshop by the IAEA on the Convention on Supplementary Compensation for Nuclear Damage last 1-4 July 2024.
