UP Department Chair Explores Dynamics of Filipino Language and Culture at Vienna Lecture

Assistant Professor Schedar D. Jocson from the University of the Philippines Diliman delivers a lecture titled, “Learning Filipino the Cultural Way” at the Philippine Embassy in Vienna on 10 September 2024

VIENNA 19 September 2024 - University of the Philippines Diliman Assistant Professor Schedar D. Jocson shared a glimpse of Filipino culture through a lecture on language at the Philippine Embassy in Vienna on 10 September 2024. 

The lecture entitled, “Learning Filipino the Cultural Way” explored how essential elements of Filipino life—food, transportation, and festivals—directly shape the language, offering attendees a unique take in understanding the Filipino way of speaking. The lecture was organized by the Embassy in line with the government’s commitment to promoting Filipino heritage globally, and was attended online and in person by Filipino diaspora members and other guests from Austria, Croatia, Slovenia, and Slovakia.

"Language evolves with culture, and as Filipino culture evolves, so does the language," Jocson remarked, addressing concerns about the language’s survival among younger generations.

In her opening remarks, Ambassador Evangelina A. Bernas emphasized the importance of these lectures, particularly for the second- and third- generation Filipinos in Europe to connect with their heritage. "We are very pleased to have Asst. Professor Jocson to talk to you about how you can learn language through culture. You learn more about the culture and you learn to appreciate the language, and perhaps from there, deepen your journey in discovering this side of your heritage," the Ambassador said. END
