Xiamen PCG personnel and their dependents trooped at the Xiamen Xiatanwei Mangrove Park
XIAMEN 25 September 2024 – In celebration of the Maritime and Archipelagic Nation Awareness Month (MANAMO) 2024 with the theme “Pamana ng Karagatan: Para sa Kinabukasan, Ating Ingatan”, the Philippine Consulate General in Ciamen trooped to the Xiatanwei Mangrove Coastal and Ecological Wetland Park and to the Xiamen Mangrove Conservation and Breeding Center to primarily view an artful sculptural rendition of the “Butanding”. It is a reminder of the Philippines as a maritime and archipelagic nation’, and the need to preserve and conserve the environment.
Consul General Maria Antonina M. Mendoza-Oblena, in brief remarks during the visit, stressed the importance of the MaNaMo celebration and stated the relevance of the Butanding and Xiatanwei Park to the month’s celebration.
The presence of “Butanding” in various regions in the Philippines, primarily in Donsol, Sorsogon has resulted in positive economic developments. It behooves the Filipino people to value the "Butanding" and its marine environment to safeguard the future. The “Butanding” is part of a “Lost Fish” Project of Filipino artist Bong Antivola, Mr. Yatao Zhang, and Mr. Uwe Schall. It is made of indigenous materials which play a valuable role in environmental protection. The “Lost Fish” project draws inspiration from the creatures of the sea which are fashioned into sculptural pieces eventually displayed or located at the Xiatanwei Mangrove Wetland Park.
This endeavor highlights the role of art in promoting awareness, preservation, and conservation of the marine environment. The visit also showcased Xiamen's success in mangrove conservation efforts, demonstrating not only environmental protection and scientific research but also popular science education and recreation.
