Philippine Junior Wushu Team Triumphs at 9th World Junior
Wushu Championships

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN 01 October 2024 — The Philippine Junior Wushu Team brings pride and honor to the country after an outstanding performance at the 9th World Junior Wushu Championships 2024. The Philippines brought home a gold and two bronze medals. Held at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex in Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei Darussalam from 25 to 30 September 2024, the event featured over 900 participants from 50 countries.

Team  Philippines  excelled  in  key  categories,  achieving  the  following  notable  victories: 

  • Gold - Alexander De Los Reyes, Boy’s Taijishan A 
  • Bronze - Johanna Jeiel Barbero, Group Junior - 48kg 
  • Bronze - Mark John Lazo, Group Junior - 48kg 

The  Philippine  delegation,  composed  of  17  members,  included  12  skilled  competitors  and  was  led  by  Coach  Tony  Candelaria.  A  number  of  participants  have  practiced  the  sport  for  10  years.  Among  the  group  is  a  remarkable  nine-year-old  participant  who  has  been  honing  their  craft  for  six  years,  reflecting  the  dedication  and  passion  of  the  young  Filipino contingent.

The Philippine Ambassador to Brunei Darussalam, H.E. Marian Jocelyn R.  Tirol-Ignacio highlighted the great showing of the Philippine team not only as a testament to  the  talent  within  the  team  but  also  a  reflection  of  the  discipline,  dedication,  passion  and  hard  work  of  the  Philippine  Wushu  community  including  its  coaches, mentors and families who supported the team throughout the journey. 

Wushu, a martial art combining performance and combat, has been gaining significant recognition on the global stage.  This championship served as a platform for these young individuals to showcase their skills and resilience at an international level.  The Philippine Junior Wushu Team’s outstanding performance demonstrates the growing influence of the Philippines in the global Wushu arena. 

The championship was organized by Brunei’s Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports in collaboration with the Wushu Federation of Brunei Darussalam and the International Wushu Federation (IWUF). END
