BEIJING 08 October 2024 — The Foreign Service Institute (FSI) launched its newest initiative, the Training and Research Outreach (TRO) Program, by organizing roundtable discussions on the topic “Forecasting China” last 26 September 2024 in Beijing, P.R. China.
Researchers from the Blue Economy Studies Section, Indo-Pacific Studies Section, and the West Philippine Sea Studies Section of FSI’s Center for International Relations and Strategic Studies (CIRSS) held separate discussions with NBC News Beijing Bureau Chief Eric Baculinao, and Ambassador of the Philippine Embassy in Beijing Jaime Flor Cruz. The roundtable discussions sought to evaluate the future directions of China’s society, politics, military, and economic development.
Baculinao shared his perspectives on the history, structure, and significant changes within the ruling Communist Party of China (CPC). He also gave possible scenarios on how the current economic philosophy of China will impact its macroeconomic outlook in the next decade. At the request of the FSI delegation, he gave his opinion on the outlook and motivation of PRC President Xi Jinping.
Ambassador Flor Cruz likewise shared his insights on the leadership style and ideological motivations of President Xi. He highlighted the values shaping Chinese culture and its policy-making and decision making.
As part of their immersion in the political and ideological environment of PRC, the FSI delegation visited Chang An Avenue, Tiananmen Square, the Old Summer Palace, and the Temple of Heaven.
Officials from the Philippine Embassy in Beijing and the Office of Asian and Pacific Affairs of the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) also participated in the roundtable discussions.
The TRO Program aimed to extend the reach of FSI through meaningful discourses with overseas experts and the provision of training programs to DFA personnel outside of Metropolitan Manila. END
