Six Philippine Films to be Featured at 12th Asian Film Festival Barcelona

BARCELONA 29 October 2024 – The Philippine Consulate General in Barcelona supported Philippine films featured at the 12th edition of the Asian Film Festival Barcelona (AFFBCN) and attended the opening ceremony held at Phenomena Cinema. Organized annually by Casa Asia, AFFBCN will run from 24 October to 3 November 2024, showcasing an impressive array of Asian cinema to Spanish audiences.

This year’s AFFBCN lineup includes a significant Philippine presence, with six entries, underscoring the country’s diverse cinematic talents. Director Kevin Mayuga’s When This is All Over competes in the Official Section, while Director Carlos Obispo’s A Lab Story is featured in the Special Section. Guardia de Honor by Director Joselito Altarejos will compete in the Discoveries Section. Lola Magdalena by Director Joel Lamangan, and Pieta by Director Adolfo Alix, Jr. represent the Philippines in the NETPAC Section. Additionally, Director Sebastien Tobler’s This Time is showcased in the Official Panorama Section.

The 2024 AFFBCN edition features 100 films from 20 countries across Asia and the Pacific region, each vying for eighteen prestigious awards across six distinct sections. Key award categories will recognize achievements in Best Film, Best Director, and Best Screenplay for each competing section. In the previous edition, the Philippine entry The Baseball Player won the Best Movie in the NETPAC (Network for the Promotion of Asian Cinema) Category, selected by an esteemed international jury, including representatives from Spain.

The Asian Film Festival Barcelona has become a celebrated cultural event, drawing enthusiastic audiences from both the local Asian community and Spanish filmgoers. Each year, the festival’s films shed light on compelling narratives, historical stories, and pressing gender issues which  resonate with the City of Barcelona’s diverse and dynamic audience. END
