Philippine Embassy in Rome Pays Tribute to Dr. Jose Rizal on His 128th Martyrdom Anniversary
ROME 09 January 2025 – In honor of the life and legacy of Dr. Jose Rizal, the Philippine Embassy in Rome commemorated the 128th Anniversary of the Martyrdom of Dr. Jose Rizal on 30 December 2024 at the Piazzale Manila, Rome, with the theme, “Rizal sa Bagong Pilipinas: Buhay at Aral, Aming Nilalandas” (Rizal in the New Philippines: Life and Teachings, as our guide”).
Philippine Ambassador to Italy Neal Imperial in his message underscored the timeless relevance of Dr. Rizal’s teachings and sacrifices, especially on how he valued education, as a guiding light to the Filipinos. In his remarks, he encouraged the Filipino community in Italy to “emulate what Rizal has done,” describing Dr. Rizal as the pinnacle of the intellectual brilliance of the Filipinos in the 19th century.
The wreath-laying ceremony was led by the Ambassador together with Mr. Carlos Simbillo, Knights of Rizal Area Commander in Italy. Other members of the Knights of Rizal (KOR) Italy as well as representatives of the Filipino ragazzi (youth) in Rome also participated in the commemoration.
One of the highlights of the event was the recitation of Dr. Rizal’s poem “A La Juventud Filipina” in its translated Filipino version “Sa Kabataang Filipino” by Ms. Ily Jujet Isip, youth representative.
On 29 December 2024, the various chapters of the Knights of Rizal and the Kababaihang Rizalista (Rome Chapter) also organized an event in commemoration of Rizal Day at the Piazzale Manila. Ambassador Imperial, Minister Donna Celeste Feliciano-Gatmaytan, and Cultural Attaché Naive Mamhot attended the event. END
