British NGO Lauds Philippines for Exemplary Consular and Legal Assistance to Overseas Filipinos

JAKARTA 27 January 2025 – Philippine Embassy in Jakarta Chargé d’Affaires Gonaranao B. Musor received representatives of Reprieve, a UK-based legal action non-governmental organization with presence in Indonesia and other parts of Southeast Asia and the Middle East on 21 January 2025.

Reprieve lauded the efforts of the Philippines in extending exemplary consular and legal assistance to distressed and vulnerable Overseas Filipinos, especially those who are incarcerated in foreign jurisdictions or at risk of human rights violations. The NGO even cited the successful repatriation of Mary Jane F. Veloso last December after being imprisoned in Indonesia on death row for more than 14 years. In turn, the Philippine Embassy shared its best practices related to the Philippines’ Assistance-to-Nationals (ATN) mandate for Overseas Filipinos. Reprieve believes the Philippines could serve as a model for other countries aiming to improve their capacity to provide consular and legal assistance to distressed nationals overseas. END
