MANILA 26 February 2025 – More than 65 snowbirds from Canada and the United States embarked on an immersive cultural and culinary journey through the northern region of the Philippines as part of Winter Escapade 9 (now on its ninth year) which was held from 9 to 18 February 2025. This year’s tour package showcased the rich heritage, breathtaking landscapes, and warm hospitality of the Ilocos Region, with visits to Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, La Union, Pangasinan as well as an optional tour of Baguio City.
The tour was led by Philippine Ambassador to Canada Maria Andrelita S. Austria, along with Consuls General Gina A. Jamoralin [Vancouver], Emma Sarne [Calgary], and Angelica Escalona [Toronto]. PH Honorary Consuls Ronaldo Opina of Winnipeg and Pepito “Pete” Escanlar of Saskatchewan also joined the tour. Winter Escapade 9 commenced with a wreath-laying ceremony at the Rizal Monument in Manila, attended by Manila Vice Mayor John Marvin “Yul Servo” C. Nieto. This solemn tribute set the tone for the meaningful journey ahead, celebrating Filipino history and national pride.
Consul General Jamoralin headed the participants from British Columbia in exploring UNESCO-listed heritage sites, centuries-old churches, and vibrant local markets, immersing themselves in the North’s rich cultural heritage. The tour also offered a gastronomic experience, allowing travelers to savor authentic Ilocano dishes and delicacies, such as bagnet, pinakbet, longganiza, delicacies such as Ilocano empanada, patupat and tupig, and observe the traditional way (with the help of carabao-pulled machine) of preparing “basi”, the native wine and “balicucha” sweets, all by-products of sugar cane highlighting the Philippines’ diverse culinary heritage. Delegates also visited Pagudpud beach, Avis Falls in Burgos, Ilocos Sand dunes and Tangadan Water Falls and Hundred Islands in Alaminos, Pangasinan. The delegates also visited the famed Paoay Church in Ilocos Norte and the Manaoag Church in Pangasinan.
Since its inception in 2014, Winter Escapade, in cooperation with the Department of Tourism and Rajah Tours, has served as a premier tourism initiative, drawing balikbayans and foreign visitors to the Philippines and contributing to local economies. END
