Philippine Embassy Conducts Fifth Episode of "La Historia Olvidada: Filipinas-Mexico 2025"; Linking Philippine and Mexican Textile Weaving Traditions
MEXICO 26 June 2025 — The Philippine Embassy in Mexico conducted the fifth episode of "La Historia Olvidada: Filipinas-México 2025," a virtual colloquium series on Philippine-Mexico relations, on 20 June 2025 via Zoom with about 100 participants including those who attended via the Embassy's YouTube channel.
Dra. Amalia Ramirez Garayzar, Professor Researcher at the Intercultural Indigenous University of Michoacán in Mexico, discussed “Philippine and Mexican Textile Weaving Traditions”.
Dra. Ramirez emphasized that traditional knowledge was exchanged through the Manila-Acapulco Galleon Trade, not only goods and people. She presented that there are textile weaving and dyeing techniques which are passed on from the Philippines to Mexico. She focused on the Ikat technique, a widely-used technique in the Philippines, but only used for the shawl called rebozos in Mexico. She showed that the Purépecha indigenous people of Michoacán, Mexico and the T’boli of Mindanao use similar warpers, or the weaving tool that prepares the thread for creating a fabric.
Dra. Ramirez expressed that her study demonstrated the shared history of the Philippines and Mexico as beyond domination. Philippine and Mexican history paved the way for knowledge exchange and led to deeper connections which can be seen and observed until today.
This virtual colloquium series highlights pivotal events and contexts that have shaped the engagements between the Philippines and Mexico, spanning from the sixteenth century to the contemporary period.
