PH Embassy in Mexico Conducts the Sixth Episode of La Historia Olvidada: Filipinas-Mexico 2025: “Manila Galleon Archaeology in Mexico”
MEXICO 24 July 2025 — The Embassy of the Republic of the Philippines in Mexico conducted the sixth episode of "La Historia Olvidada: Filipinas-México 2025," a virtual colloquium series on Philippine-Mexico relations, on 18 July 2025 via Zoom with about 75 participants including those who attended via the Embassy´s YouTube channel.
Dr. Roberto Junco Sanchez, archaeologist at the Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia in Mexico, discussed “Manila Galleon Archaeology in Mexico”.
Dr. Junco highlighted the importance of archaeology as it shows the influences, technology, interactions, and dynamics of peoples and cultures throughout history. He stated that changes throughout history can be observed through archaeology.
The discussion demonstrated the impact of the Manila Galleons in the local economy in the Americas. Merchandise going to Europe that were supposedly unloaded only in the Port of Acapulco, reached various states in Mexico, and went as far as Santa Fe in the United States of America.
The Manila Galleon archaeology provided a different perspective in studying the historical relationship of the Philippines and Mexico, as well as of Asia and the Americas as continents across the Pacific. It provided a deeper understanding on the importance of archaeology in cultural discussions.
This episode is the last for Ambassador Lilybeth R. Deapera as her tenure ends in July 2025. The Ambassador, in her remarks, extended appreciation to all the co-organizers, supporters and participants, and expressed hope that the Embassy’s colloquium series will continue to draw even more interest in the years ahead.
This virtual colloquium series highlights pivotal events and contexts that have shaped the engagements between the Philippines and Mexico, spanning from the sixteenth century to the contemporary period.
