HONG KONG 24 July 2025 — The Philippine Consulate General in Hong Kong witnessed Hong Kong Antiquities and Monuments Office (HKAMO)’s installation of the replacement commemorative plaque located on the external wall of Century Square, No. 5, D’Aguilar Street, Central, Hong Kong last 18 July 2025. The historical marker, originally installed in 2012, indicates the site of Dr. José Rizal’s ophthalmic clinic when he took residence in the city between 1891 to 1892.

Mr. Sam Wu, Assistant Curator at the HKAMO, led the installation of the restored historical plaque. HKAMO opted to replace the marker in light of the recent maintenance work conducted by the building’s management office. Further the new plaque, which retains its original content, is noticeably made of polyurethane plastic, a material that has better ability to withstand wear, pressure, or damage than its metal predecessor.

Philippine Consul General to Hong Kong Romulo Victor M. Israel, Jr., with representatives of Sentro Rizal Hong Kong and Knights of Rizal, looked on as the HKAMO affixed the historical marker back into the area approximating where the original No. 5 D’Aguilar building main door was situated during Dr. José Rizal’s tenantship of the place more than a century ago.

In addition to the commemorative plaque located in No. 5 D’Aguilar Street, the Philippine Consulate also encourages interested individuals to visit other historical markers of significance to Philippine history in Hong Kong. This includes Rednaxela Terrace in Mid-Levels, where Dr. José Rizal established his residence in the city, and Morrison Hill Road Playground in Wan Chai, where the first Philippine flag was sewn.
