BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN 18 July 2025 - The Philippine Embassy in Brunei Darussalam successfully hosted the sixth installment of its monthly Lepak Sine! program on 18 July 2025 at the Embassy’s Consular Annex Hall.

The evening began with a special screening of the short film Salog Ning Diklom (Black River) by Jordan Dela Cruz, presented in partnership with the Sentro Rizal Film Club. The 23-minute film transported audiences to the Bicol River, where a fisherman’s spiritual and emotional journey in search of his missing wife offered a compelling prelude to the night’s main feature.

The featured film of the night, from the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP), was Ano ang Kulay ng mga Nakalimutang Pangarap?, a 2013 drama written and directed by Jose Javier “Joey” Reyes. The film follows Yaya Teresa, an aging nanny who dedicated 60 years of her life to serving a middle-class Filipino family, after the family matriarch’s death.

In her opening remarks, Her Excellency Ambassador Marian Jocelyn R. Tirol-Ignacio underscored how cinema gives voice to stories often overlooked. Ano ang Kulay ng mga Nakalimutang Pangarap? movingly captures the nanny as surrogate mother and  family member, a status not given to other domestic workers in the Filipino home.  The films challenged audiences to reflect on identity and belonging, to loyalty and quiet sacrifices made within families.

The name Lepak Sine! combines the Bruneian Malay word lepak which means “to hang out” and the Filipino word sine which means “cinema.” The program serves as a welcoming space for cultural exchange and the appreciation of Filipino storytelling.

As the Embassy deepens its cultural diplomacy efforts, Lepak Sine! is set to grow further with future screenings that feature panel discussions, local collaborations, and community engagement activities. The initiative continues to strengthen the bonds between Filipino and Bruneian audiences through shared stories and meaningful dialogue. END
