SAN FRANCISCO 08 August 2025 – The Philippine Consulate General in San Francisco joined The Hinabi Project (THP) in the opening of “Mountain Spirits: Textiles and Folk Arts of the Cordilleras” on 06 August 2025, at Sentro Filipino in San Francisco. The Consulate was represented by Consul Rowena Pangilinan-Daquipil.
Organized by The Hinabi Project, the exhibition celebrates the rich indigenous textile traditions of the Cordillera region in northern Philippines. THP Co-Founder and Vice President Edwin Lozada, who also curated the exhibit, welcomed guests and introduced the collection, which includes intricately woven textiles and vintage baskets—some between 50 to 100 years old—as well as rarely seen archival photographs of life in the Cordilleras.
Lozada shared that several of the textiles were specially commissioned from master weavers in the region, many of whom continue to practice traditional techniques passed down through generations. He emphasized the cultural value and craftsmanship involved in the process, and the need to keep these traditions alive within Filipino and global communities.
The exhibition invites viewers to appreciate not only the artistry but also the deep cultural narratives embedded in Cordilleran weaving. It also underscores the importance of cultural preservation, particularly within the Filipino diaspora.
“Mountain Spirits” will be on view at Sentro Filipino until November 2025. The exhibit is open to the public and free of charge.
