07 August 2014 - Philippine Ambassador to Nigeria Alex V. Lamadrid attended the quarterly meeting of the East South Chapter of the Nigerian Graduates of Philippine Schools (PHILGRAN) On August 3 held in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. In his address to the Nigerian alumni of various Philippine universities, who are now occupying important posts in the public and private sectors, Ambassador Lamadrid exhorted the Nigerian alumni to promote the further expansion of people to people contacts, tourism, trade and investments between Nigeria and the Philippines.

 

Ambassador Lamadrid also  met with the officers and members of the Filipino Association in Port Harcourt (FAP) led by its President Mrs. Wilma Florendo Nakhai. Besides reminding the overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) to be mindful of their health in view of the prevalence of tropical diseases such as malaria, polio, Ebola virus (EVD) and HIV-AIDS, Ambassador Lamadrid also recommended that the OFWs should cultivate financial literacy by saving and investing their hard-earned money for their eventual return or retirement to the Philippines.

 

The Philippine Embassy’s Communications and Administrative Assistant Mr. Clifford Legal accompanied Ambassador Lamadrid to Port Harcourt and processed applications for passports and overseas voters registration.

 

Port Harcourt is the center of Nigeria’s oil and gas industry, and is host to hundreds of Filipino professionals and technical specialists working in various multinational companies. END
