07 August 2014 - The Philippines was chosen as one of the featured countries at the 20th edition of the Isola del Cinema Film Festival on August 1 to 2 held at the Isola Tiberina in Rome, Italy. For two nights the Philippines had made a prominent presence in the Tiber Island which is usually packed with people during the summer.

With the support of the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP), the Philippine Embassy in Rome headed by Ambassador Virgilio A. Reyes. Jr,  was able to bring high quality films to the Italian public and the Filipinos in Italy.  Insiang, Sakay, Himala and a documentary film on Philippine Marine Biodiversity were shown to the public free of charge.

In his remarks, Ambassador Reyes highlighted that the Philippine film industry has an abundant talent of artists. The featured films are testimonies of the brilliance and ingenuity of Filipino film makers and actors.

He thanked the European audience particularly the Italians for their immense support to Filipino films and film makers. It may be recalled that a considerable number of Filipino films are recognized in various film festivals in Europe.

The film festival also provided an opportunity to showcase the rich, diverse and beautiful  culture of the Philippines through dance, songs and a display of modern and traditional Filipino costumes. Talented Filipino performers regaled the audience with traditional dances such as Pangalay, Asik, Janggay, Subli, Itik-itik, Binislakan, Binoyugan and Tinikling. A group of Filipino teens also rendered a fusion of traditional and modern dances.

Mr. Giorgio Ginori, founder and artistic director of the Isola del Cinema Film Festival, commended the growing film industry in the Philippines. He remarked that after watching the films and the cultural performances, he is encouraged to visit the Philippines and see for himself the beauty of the country.

Through the Philippine Festival at the Isola del Cinema, the Philippines was able to advance better appreciation of Filipino culture and the arts not only among the Italians but the Filipinos who have long been staying in Italy. END
