27 August 2014 – Philippine Consul General in Guam Marciano R. De Borja paid a courtesy call on Guam Governor Eddie Baza Calvo at the Ricardo J. Bordallo Governor’s Complex in Adelup, Agana, Guam on August 22.

During the meeting, the two officials had a very engaging discussion on how to further deepen the economic, educational and cultural ties between the Philippines and Guam.

Governor Calvo received Consul General De Borja at the Governor’s office in Adelup and warmly welcomed him to Guam. The Governor also wished Consul General De Borja well as the latter embarks on his mission as the new head of the Philippine Consulate General.

For his part, Consul General De Borja expressed his intention to establish a very close working partnership between the Consulate General and the different agencies of the Guam Government, the private sector and various community organizations on the island for the benefit of both Filipinos and Guamanians. Consul General De Borja also presented Governor Calvo with a box of gourmet chocolates from Cebu as a token of appreciation.

During the call, Consul General De Borja took the opportunity to reiterate the interest of the City Government of Mandaue to enter into a twinning agreement with Guam and highlighted the fact that Mandaue is the industrial hub of Cebu province. Governor Calvo expressed interest in visiting that part of the Philippines as most of his visits to the country had been confined to Luzon. Consul General De Borja proposed that once the text for the twinning agreement is finalized the signing ceremony could be held in Mandaue and serve as an occasion for Governor Calvo to visit and bring with him a business delegation from Guam. Both officials agreed to have their respective offices work towards this goal with the hope that the signing of the agreement could be scheduled before the end of the year.

At the end of their nearly hour-long dialogue, Governor Calvo invited Consul General De Borja to an adjoining conference hall where he introduced the new Consul General to the Filipino-American members of his official family in the Government of Guam. Consul General De Borja again thanked the Governor for the opportunity to meet with the Filipino-American officials in the different branches of the Guam Government. He noted that this introduction would greatly facilitate the coordination that the Consulate General will have to do with the different government agencies of Guam in relation with the projects in economic and cultural diplomacy, as well as in community relations, that will be implemented during his tenure.
