17 September 2014 – Mr. Romeo Cayabyab, editor and publisher of online newspaper, “The Filipino Australian”, won the Photographer of the Year Award at the Multicultural and Indigenous Media Awards (MIMA) 2014 on September 10 held at the New South Wales Parliament in Sydney. The Award was presented to Mr. Cayabyab by Hon. Peter Primrose, Member of the New South Wales (NSW) Legislative Council and Shadow Minister for Finance and Services.

Mr. Cayabyab’s winning entry entitled, “Walk for Respect: Its Story in Photos”, comprises a series of photos documenting the protest march held in Lakemba by members of the multi-ethnic community, indigenous community and the greater Australian society who joined forces on May 25 to convey their opposition to the Federal government’s proposal to amend Section 18C of Australia’s anti-discrimination law which would water down protection against racial vilification.

At the awards ceremony, Hon. Shaoquett Moselmane, Member of the NSW Legislative Council and Chairman and Founder of the Awards, congratulated the winners whom he said were chosen from among 130 nominees from various media outlets nationwide including online and print media, radio and TV. He expressed satisfaction over the growth of the MIMA Awards which aims to recognize multicultural community media outlets and their journalists.

At the first Multicultural Media Awards in September 2012, Mr. Cayabyab also won the “Award for Coverage of Community Affairs in Australia”.

As editor of the online newspaper, “The Filipino Australian”, Mr. Cayabyab received from the Commission for Filipinos Overseas (CFO) the award for “Best Website in the Interactive Media Category” in the Migration Advocacy & Media Awards (MAM) 2012.

Consul Marford Angeles conveyed the Consulate’s warm congratulations to Mr. Cayabyab and encouraged him to continue representing the Filipino community with excellence in his field, and to serve as an inspiration to his fellow hardworking colleagues in the Filipino community media in NSW. END
