04 October 2014 – Philippine Consul General Marciano R. De Borja met with College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences Dean Dr. James D. Sellman, and Professor of History Dr. Donald Platt, at the University of Guam on October 01 at the Office of the Dean, University of Guam.
The meeting was part of Consul General De Borja’s efforts to enhance cultural and educational exchanges between the Philippines and Guam.
Professor Platt, who studied history at the University of the Philippines and who teaches Philippine history at the University of Guam every fall semester, expressed interest in bringing his students to the Philippines to visit all the historical sites that he covers in his classes, including Intramuros, Corregidor, Bataan and Cabanatuan.
Consul General De Borja invited Professor Platt to provide details about the itinerary and duration of their planned visit so that the Consulate General, in cooperation with the Philippine Department of Tourism, could assist in having a program designed for the purpose.
During the meeting, Consul General De Borja discussed with Dr. Sellman and Professor Platt his two books, Basques in the Philippines and The State Department Boys: Philippine Diplomacy and Its American Heritage. He extended an invitation to both Dr. Sellman and Professor Platt to attend the launching of The State Department Boys at the University of Guam on November 12 and asked Professor Platt to speak about Edward W. Mill, the American professor who was charged with designing the program for the pioneer Filipino diplomats who were trained at the US State Department – thus the term State Department Boys. Because of his work, Mill is referred to in Consul General De Borja’s book as the “Father of the Philippine Foreign Service.” END
