20 October 2014 - In celebration of Filipino American History Month, Philippine Consul General Gina A. Jamoralin gave a lecture entitled, “Philippines-US Relations: Reflections and Perspectives on an Enduring Alliance” on October 15 at the Center for Philippine Studies (CPS), University of Hawaii (UH) in Manoa. Around 50 individuals from the academe and the Filipino-American community attended the lecture.

The event, which was organized by the Philippine Consulate General in Honolulu, in partnership with the CPS, marked the first time that a Philippine Consul General spoke and gave a lecture at the university. Consul General Jamoralin gave an overview of the Philippines-US bilateral relations and highlighted various facets of the the alliance - political, economic, defense and security, and people-to-people ties. She also discussed the challenges and opportunities in the relations, and her visions for the relations in the 21st century.

“In total, I could say that our relations with the United States is forward-looking and mutually beneficial. Our alliance is enduring, stable and remains firmly grounded in our shared history and common democratic values. It has also become relevant in the light of the US’ rebalance to Asia,” Consul General Jamoralin said in conclusion.

Dr. Patricio Abinales, a professor of the UH Asian Studies program, provided a response to the Consul General’s lecture. Consul General Jamoralin also fielded questions from the audience about her lecture, the nature of her work as a Philippine diplomat and the anti-corruption and good governance platform of the Aquino administration.

The event, which also was the Fall 2014 Reception of the CPS, capped off with a merienda  prepared by the Consulate General. END
