20 October 2014 - The Philippine Consulate General in Agana, in cooperation with Guam Filipino Artists (GFA), continued its Gender and Development (GAD) program series on Financial Literacy and Entrepreneurship, which highlighted a lecture on budgeting and hands-on workshop on faux glass wall décor using recycled bottled water.
The activity was held the on October 04 and 11 at the consular section of the Consulate General.
The first part of the program was the hands-on training on the craft of faux glass wall décor conducted by Ms. Ruby Fabro-Torres, a member of the Guam Filipino Artists and an art teacher for kindergarten to fourth-grade students at the Saint Anthony Catholic School. She taught the participants how to recycle plastic bottles so that these can be used to form faux glass flowers and made into wall décor or put in a flower vase. The workshop not only focused on developing a new livelihood craft skill, but also instilled the importance of recycling waste materials and transforming these into useful objects of art to help protect the environment and conserve the natural resources.
On the other hand, Consul Mark Francis Hamoy continued his financial literacy lecture, this time focusing on budgeting for personal financial well-being. He shared tips with the participants on how to formulate a personal budget, spend wisely, cut spending, and save for future goals and develop lifelong income management skills.
Consul General Marciano R. de Borja handed out certificates of appreciation to the three resource speakers of the lecture and workshops, namely, Consul Mark Francis C. Hamoy for financial literacy, Professor Mila Moguel for quilt making and Ms. Ruby Fabro-Torres for faux glass wall décor. Consul General de Borja also gave certificates of completion to participants who completed the four Saturday sessions and certificates of attendance to those participants who were unable to completely attend all sessions.
The lecture and workshop series was attended by female staff members of the Consulate General, together with their dependents and some members of the Filipino community. END
