sg homestretch

10 December 2014 - This year’s Philippine Art Trek in Singapore reached the homestretch with two more events.

On November 28, a solo exhibit entitled, “instanity” by Filipino artist Luis Lorenzana opened at Silverlens Gallery at 47 Malan Road, #01-25 Gillman Barracks, Singapore. The event was attended by representatives of the Philippine Embassy in Singapore, led by Acting Consul General Victorio Mario M. Dimagiba Jr., members of the Filipino community including BBC’s Rico Hizon as well as local and foreign art patrons.

The visual narrative of Mr. Lorenzana’s practice is home to an uncanny cast of characters and motifs. Malformed features, hollowed eyes that ebb away at viewers and chimeras in amorphous forms take the stage alongside depictions of poised women, still and frozen.

Rendered in his defining style of pop surrealism, they are reflections of his inner landscape – a realm of make-believe and grotesquerie that is immaculately staged and imbued with a veritable sense of theatricality. The exhibit will run until December 21.

Having originally graduated with a degree in Public Administration, Luis Lorenzana is a self-taught artist and illustrator who creates his own unique brand of pop surrealist works. He has participated in over 20 group and solo shows in Hong Kong, Germany and the United States.

The artist has also been a finalist for the Philip Morris Philippine Art  Awards, the International Book Illustration Competition and the Metrobank Art and Excellence Awards.

Over the weekend, the “Artists Talk” under the Philippine Art Trek 2014 was held at the Di Legno Gallery, 188-6 Tanjong Katong Road. Mr. Noell El Farol, President of the Philippine Association of Printmakers (PAP) and Ms. Mervy Pueblo, School of Fine Arts at the Philippine Women’s University (PWU), came in as resource speakers.

During the anchor Art Trek event, Ms. Mervy Pueblo shared her thoughts about “Art in the Public Sphere: Art of the People, for the People, by the People”. Mr. Farol for his part discussed his views on “Contemporary Prints in the Philippines.” Representatives from the Philippine Embassy in Singapore and members of the Filipino community participated in the lecture.

The Philippine Art trek 8 concluded with the opening of the show, “A Nation of Ulysses” by Victor Balanon at the Artesan Gallery on December 03, 7:00 p.m. at the ArtSpace, 222 Queen Street #02-03 (S) 188550.  END
