26 January 2015 - The Philippine Consulate General in Vancouver participated in the University of British Columbia’s (UBC) “Of Rice and Roots” (ORAR) on January 20. The event was organized by the Centre for Southeast Asian Research in cooperation with the various Southeast Asian student associations in UBC and the ASEAN Consulates in Vancouver. Aside from the Philippines, other ASEAN Consulates represented were Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam.
Now on its 2nd year, the ORAR was merged with the annual Southeast Asia Food Night which has attracted a much wider spectrum of participants from students and faculty members of UBC, the business community and friends of ASEAN community in Vancouver. This year’s holding of the ORAR has enabled the ASEAN to project a better impression within the UBC community by providing guests and attendees first hand experience of ASEAN culture and cuisine.
The Philippine booth showcased Philippine made products such as native handicrafts, finely embroidered fabrics, jewelries and bags which generated much interest from visitors as well as books on Philippine cuisine such as “Kulinarya”. Samples of cakes and “sago at gulaman” from Goldilocks Bakeshop were also popular during the night.
