09 February 2015 – Philippine Consul General Gina A. Jamoralin, with former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and former Philippine Permanent Representative to the United Nations Hilario Davide Jr., attended the Installation Ceremony and Annual General Meeting of the Philippine Medical Association of Hawaii (PMAH) on January 24. Consul General Jamoralin inducted to office the new President, Dr. Carolina Davide, and other officers and Board of Governors of the PMAH. Former Chief Justice Davide who flew in from Manila specially for the event, delivered the keynote address.
Now on its 37th year, the PMAH is a non-profit organization created for the purpose of enhancing the professional, social, educational and general welfare of the Filipino physicians in Hawaii. Its membership is composed of more than a hundred physicians all over Hawaii. PMAH conducts medical missions to the Philippines, the latest in June to July of 2014 to revisit the typhoon Yolanda/Haiyan survivors in Leyte and the poor communities in Bagong Silang, Caloocan City through its affiliate – the PMAH Ohana Medical Missions Inc. Another affiliate of the PMAH is the “Bayanihan Clinic Without Walls”, a group of Filipino-American doctors who also conduct volunteer medical missions in the Philippines.
In her speech, the Consul General lauded the PMAH members for their volunteer work especially the medical missions in the Philippines which have reached out to the poorest communities in the country. She also encouraged them to continue their good work and to excel in their medical professions for which the Filipino doctors are known all over the world. Consul General Jamoralin took the opportunity to invite the PMAH members to join this year’s 10th Ambassadors, Consuls Generals, Tourism Directors Tour (ACGTDT) in Manila and Cebu as well as to register as overseas voters for eligible Filipino Americans in Hawaii.
On February 04, former Chief Justice Davide also held a dialogue with law students of the University of Hawaii at Manoa, William S. Richardson School of Law on the topic of environmental justice. Former Chief Justice Davide spoke about his work in the United Nations and General Assembly leading to the adoption of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. END
