23 March 2015 – Philippine Consul General in Macau SAR Lilybeth Deapera paid a call on Macau Administration and Justice Secretary Sonia Chan Hoi Fan on March 06. During the meeting, Secretary Chan noted of the large Filipino community in the Special Administrative Region and the contribution of Filipinos to the development of Macau. She stated that “a good friendship” has been forged between the Filipino and Macau people and expressed optimism that this strong bond will continue in the future.
Consul General Deapera and Secretary Chan talked about the protection of Filipino workers in Macau. Secretary Chan gave assurance that Macau’s “Law on the Employment of Non-Resident Workers” accorded the appropriate benefits and rights to migrant workers. Consul General Deapera informed the Secretary that the Consulate General provides assistance to Filipino workers in Macau and undertakes initiatives, such as seminars on financial literacy, culinary lessons and classes on Cantonese language, to help them adjust to local conditions. The Consul General also said that the Consulate General is doing its best to fully educate the Filipinos in Macau of their rights and responsibilities as non-resident workers.
Consul General Deapera thanked Secretary Chan for Macau SAR’s warm welcome to the Filipinos. She noted that Macau has embraced the Filipino community and has allowed the expression of Filipino culture to flourish. In turn, Secretary Chan reiterated her support for the efforts of the Philippine Consulate General in Macau. END
