17 April 2015 - The Philippine Embassy in Buenos Aires organized a livelihood seminar on basic haircut and hairstyling for the Filipino community on March 29 at the Chancery in commemoration of Women’s Month and International Women’s Day. The activity was oriented towards providing the Filipino community with a useful income-generating skill.

Ms. Concepcion Acosta, a professional hair stylist and salon owner, gave a three-hour intensive course on hair cutting and styling as well as basic knowledge on how to establish a hair salon business in Buenos Aires. Ms. Concepcion shared her experiences as a self-made businesswoman and encouraged everyone present, mostly female members of the Filipino community, to consider doing salon home services as a means to earn additional income.

The Filipino community members were enthusiastic participants, gamely posing as hair models, and asking Ms. Acosta a number of questions about technique and her business.  They mentioned that they are also interested in learning other salon services such as manicures, pedicures, and hair removal.

In her closing remarks, Second Secretary and Consul Ma. Carmela Teresa A. Cabreira emphasized the important roles that Filipino women play within their families as well as in nation-building and economic growth. She encouraged the audience to use the skills they learned during the seminar as a means for self-development and greater financial independence.

Based on the Embassy’s latest statistics, more than 2/3 of the 150 Filipinos in Argentina are women.  END
